Not such a hottie babe after all
I think I might be a liar.
Among my family and friends, both online and off, I am known for liking it hot. Big fan of the hotness. Not people, weather. Well yeah, people too. God knows I’ve got a weakness for men who resemble my husband or first love. Ahem. But that’s not what we’re talking about today.
I’m referring here to the current weather. HOT. Very, very HOT. If I hadn’t taken the little weather widget out of my sidebar because it was so inaccurate, you could see what I mean. That is, you could have if it had ever been right, which it wasn’t.? So let me just inform you that our temperatures here in sunny Southern Califonia were in the triple digits this weekend. NOT our typical June Gloom. Skies clear as glass and painfully blue, ruled over by a merciless sun. August weather.
Now, here’s the thing: I’m supposed to love hot weather. How many times have I mentioned it here? Like, hundreds. You guys know all about the early childhood in Libya, the SoCal upbringing, the obsessive love for Vegas and Tucson. HOT places. And that’s really the only characteristic they all have in common, right? So clearly, I must love hot weather, right?
This weekend, I did not love it. We have awesome A/C, so it was never?unpleasant in our apartment. But I had all these things I wanted to do that involved leaving the house. And I didn’t want to.?Just thinking about?venturing forth into that oven-like outdoors made me feel wilted. We had a dire-necessity trip to Fry’s first thing Saturday, so we forced ourselves to?include a few other errands that were essential, but headed home as soon as possible. We spent the rest of the weekend inside with the blinds drawn, reveling in the semi-artic chill. Now and then we’d peer through the blinds at the sweltering streets, make token mention of the things “we really should” go do, then pour ourselves another Rum & Something and put in another movie. Didn’t leave the house again until this morning.
So, I’m thinking maybe I don’t love ALL hot weather. Maybe it’s the really dry kind like Vegas has that I truly love. When I’m in my favorite city in the whole world, I’m almost never inside. True, I spend as much time in the?water as possible, but even wandering around the Strip doesn’t bother me. Hell, my sister and I climbed around Red Rock Canyon one day … in July! It was hot, for sure, but it’s that dry heat that evaporates your sweat as fast as it forms, so you never feel miserable. And I once spent an August afternoon walking from the now-imploded Stardust all the way to Mandalay Bay simply because I was counting T-shirt shops. Loved every minute of it. Maybe it’s the energy on the Strip, but for me, it’s never too hot to be outside in Sin City. I felt that way in Tucson too, although the vibe was entirely different. In both locations,?the air?feels different. Like there’s more oxygen in it or something.
Maybe I should move to a desert city, huh? Um, NO. Too far from the ocean, and I learned the hard way that’s a VERY BAD THING for me.?And that’s a story?you all know.

I live in Seattle because it is very rarely “hot” and when it is, it doesn’t last very long. I do not do well in heat. Think Blanche DuBois in Streetcar Named Desire. “I hate it when I’m sticky” -yeah, that’s me.
You can have all the heat that I don’t want!

It’s nice here in the Midwest right now, but it’ll be muggy as shit soon enough.
I booked my tickets to your fine city last week. We’ll be there Sept. 11-21. You damn well better be able to meet for fish tacos sometime. :)
Maybe we can sing “Endless Love” in a karaoke bar. :D

So it’s humid there? Hot weather like that actually makes me physically sick. It gives me migraines (the contrast from going back and forth between hot and cold).

Yeah, I don’t dig the heat. Weird that I live in Florida. I think I’ll likely live in the south for a while. I don’t want to live anywhere that’s FRIGID, either. But I pretty much spend my summers bouncing from A/C to A/C. New Mexico was great because, while it gets hot, it’s that dry heat you mentioned.

Yeah, love THIS honey! This heat, in case you are unfamiliar with the HUMID Coast is f**king HUMID! Fortunately, it has since left us, but may be a harbinger of our July and August.
I love the hotness of the hot LEFT Coast as well. : )

Sizzle: I would much rather have some of Seattle’s RAIN!
ajooja: We are so ON for fish tacos in OB! When you go to Hodad’s this time, I hope you’ll remember to not order a double. And I’m gonna hold you to that karaoke thing, dude.
Kim: It’s not really humid, at least not what *I* call humid. It’s just not DRY. There is no dry heat that compares to that in the high deserts. I get the rapid-change headaches, too.
Karl: I expect it’s much more humid in Florida, though, which makes it all the more miserable. Yeah, New Mexico’s weather is quite similar to Arizona’s. LOVE it.
Kevin: May I quote you on that? :D
John: I lived 10 months in central Georgia. I KNOW humid.
WrongEast Coast humidity cannot be comprehended unless you have personally experienced it. I found it suffocating. Hey, wanna go surfing on the 4th? Oh wait, you’re busy … 8)June 23rd, 2008 at 8:02 pm
Hey, I’ll CHUCK my gig for a wave!

Unusually for a Brit I really don’t mind hot at all - even Texas hot and humid didn’t really bother me. You may want to rethink your plans of ever visiting England though, we rarely get properly hot here, (weather, not people - heh!). You may get frost bite…in Summer!!

Penelope: That’s okay. Cold and rainy is my OTHER favorite kind of weather! And something I rarely get to experience.

It’s finally hot here in Utah… now granted, days of 100+ temps are a bit much, but I don’t mind some 90’s. Especially if I’m on my scooter and can have the wind cool me off as I ride.
