Two point five

I came home from a birthday brunch yesterday to discover that, at long last, WordPress 2.5 has been released. I was both excited and terrified. WP 2.5 has been in the works for more than six months, and lately we WPers have been getting tidbits and teasers of its wonderfulness almost daily. Many users downloaded the two “release candidates” to give it a test run, but I was chicken. My history with WordPress upgrades has been rocky, to put it mildly. So I’ve been waiting for the final, tested and approved product.

This time, I had a system. This time, I knew what NOT to do. This time, I had a trick up my sleeve that, swear to God, I dreamed one night. I also took the time to prepare for the upgrade by doing a full backup and putting Pseudotherapy into Maintenance Mode (genius, that plug-in).

The upgrade went as smoothly as a wet dream on satin sheets. Nothing broke. Nothing disappeared. Neither blood nor tears were shed, although there was a brief moment of cold sweat when I hit the View Site button. But all was as it should be, and there was much rejoicing in Casita Duka. Altogether, from backup to View Site, the process took less than an hour. And I am now enjoying the sweet rockrageousness that is WordPress 2.5.

By the way, the little trick that I dreamed? I edited the php files to put in all my customizations BEFORE I uploaded them to my server. That’s actually what took the better part of the hour, but saved me big time in the long run. I recommend it.

What customizations would you have made that would have affected the upgrade - wouldn’t they all be in your “themes” folder, which is untouched by the upgrade?

My design is completely written by scratch, and I just did the upgrade through WP’s Automatic Upgrade plugin. It took three minutes and everything was working fine.

Kim: Me too! The 2.3 Dexter upgrade was such a monkeyfuck.

    Bec: Indeed.

Avitable: My themes folder was definitely not untouched by the upgrade. There are numerous changes in the php files for the default theme, from which Pseudotherapy’s “look” was adapted. In fact, a couple of the 2.5 improvements which eliminated the need for plugins I’d used make use of those files. The CSS stylesheet itself had several changes. Plus, the php that defines the new gallery feature resides in the Themes folder; how would you get that if you don’t upgrade that folder?

I’ve never used the Automatic Install plug-in. I did think about trying it yesterday, but wasn’t willing to since it’s not on the list of 2.5-compatible plug-ins. Good to know it *is* compatible.

Karl: And you’re gonna love it!

  6. Avitable Says:

Ah, I see what you’re saying. What I mean is that I’m not going to adjust my custom theme to reflect any changes the upgrade made because my theme already has all of the functionality that I want.

hooray. glad it went well for you. I’m considering the upgrade this time…we shall see…

  8. SJ Says:

Avitable: Oh my god, that must be wonderful. I can’t even imagine *knowing* there were new functions available and not *wanting* them. Even when I know I won’t actually use them, I can’t stand not having them. Yeah, obsessive that way. But so far, I’m loving all the new functions in 2.5!

Suze: When you do, check out the Automatic Upgrade plug-in Avitable mentioned. It sounds pretty freaking amazing.
