It’s not Hell, but I can see it from here

Okay. Okay. I can actually post again. Three important functions are still broken, and I still have NO CLUE why. But at least I can post. Oh, and two of my favorite plug-ins are apparently not compatible with this version. But at least I can post now.

I am NEVER updating WordPress again. I don’t care if they incorporate graphic tablet functionality. I don’t care if they add voice recognition capability and you can simply dictate into a mic to post to your blog. I don’t care if the next update adds a video of Joe Elliott singing “Wang Dang Doodle” in the nude. NEVER. AGAIN.

For that matter, if I can’t get those functions working again, I’m seriously considering going back to Blogger. One of the broken ones is comment notification, which shoots me an email whenever a comment is posted on my blog. Not working. I’ve checked every setting I know of. I’ve changed my preferences, and re-saved them. I’ve scoured the coding line by line. Can’t find any reason for it to not work. The only thing I can think of is that whatever code corrected the security vulnerability also disabled that function.

Three days. THREE FUCKING DAYS I’ve been struggling to fix things after installing 2.3.2. So not worth it. I am so SO OVER this WordPress bullshit.

Sorry. I’m still too angry and frustrated to appreciate the feelings of relief that it’s working at all. I’ll be back after my blood pressure drops.

:( I am never updating. Poor SJ. Why is wordpress so confusing? Don’t they realize no one can understand their bullshit tutorials? They write a effing book (for instructions) just to do one simple thing!

  2. Hilly Says:

I’ll say one thing about your update hells….they always make me just a little more appreciative of TypePad and assuage that need of mine to switch over!

  3. Catherine Says:

I chose Wordpress for my supplemental blog because a techie friend of mine chose it for his and raved. He knows about stuff like this a lot better than I do, so. Yeah well, hmph: I can’t get the blogroll to show up. Such a simple thing, and even after following instructions quite to the letter, still nothin’. Can’t see my site meter, can’t link to my original blog, Pfffft!!! I’m nowhere as advanced as you in tweaking a blog, so at first I thought, well, it’s just me, I’m missing something. But now I wonder.

  4. suze Says:

    wow. Still not updating…

  5. Juli Says:

C’mon… Joe Elliott naked?! I’d bet you update. ;)

  6. SJ Says:

Kim: I KNOW!!! We need a book just to understand their support documentation!

Hilly: Learn from my purgatory …

Catherine: You know, I’m pretty damn good with computers, but WordPress KILLS me. I’m starting to believe the problem is because it’s open source. Too many chefs stirring the pot.

    Suze: DON’T. Just don’t.

Juli: Nope. Not even for him. And that right there speaks volumes.

  7. Laughing Muse Says:

The problem isn’t necessarily open source. They aren’t treating this like an actual business (and there are plenty of “actual businesses” that treat their clients as badly *cough*Micro$oft*cough*) and so aren’t really working as hard on the user-centric portions of the software.

The billing software I was hoping to use for my hosting company is the same way, unfortunately. Going on two years, the damn thing -=still=- doesn’t have all its features working.

That’s why I just stick with stupid Blogger. It sucks ocassionally but I haven’t had too many troubles.

  9. Karl Says:

Ugh, I can’t be bothered searching through code these days. pain in the ass.

  10. Geeky Tai-Tai Says:

You know that I had been thinking of going to WordPress, but not anymore. I’ll stick with Blogger. I’m sorry you’ve had such a sucky week. I really loved your previous rant though. lol ;-)

  11. SJ Says:

Muse: Wow, what a generous offer! I’m checking it out, due to total unfamiliarity.

ajooja: I switched to WordPress because I felt that I’d “outgrown” Blogger. Clearly, I’m just too damn dumb to use WP proficiently, since updating always throws me into a tailspin.

Karl: I LOVE code! I just don’t understand the php language well enough to figure everything out. If it was all good old HTML, it’d be a piece o’ cake for me.

Diana: And my week isn’t over yet … stay tuned for more rants!

  12. Bec Says:

OKay, erm…. I’m just going to quietly say I had no problems… and shut up.

  13. Megan Says:

It’s funny. Just about everyone who’s on Wordpress thinks it’s fabulous EXCEPT for the constant tinkering that’s required. Meanwhile, Blogger is just OK, but never requires maintenance. I’m sticking with Blogger.

  14. SJ Says:

Bec: WHAT?!?!?! Did you update to 2.3.2? And you’ve had no problems??? All your plug-ins work and everything?

Megan: That is exactly my opinion of WordPress. When you get it set up right, in between updates, it’s AWESOME. The updates, however, are HELL.
