Let your lovelight shine, shine on me

Spotted at Hilly’s

The Great Mofo Delurk 2007It’s a puzzlement. According to my Awstats log, 30% of this blog’s visitors add it to their Favorites menu. And while that is total coolness, Parker, it makes me wonder, If you like me so much, why aren’t you commenting?

Because you clearly are not. I never rack up huge numbers on the comments anyway, but I hardly ever see an unfamiliar name on one. All my regular/frequent commenters have been supporters of this blog (or one of my previous ones!) for some time, so it can’t be them just now adding me to their faves! Who are you, my secret admirers?

Thanks to Schmutzie, today has been declared The Great Mofo Delurk. So here’s your chance, oh ye of little face! Come forth and be counted, or at least appreciated. Step into the light and say hello! I promise I won’t bite … unless you ask me nicely.

  1. Hilly Says:

I figured it out yesterday that only 6% of the people reading my blog are commenting…that’s amazing!

And you said, “coolness, Parker”. I think I love you.

  2. schmutzie Says:

I often have as low as 1% commenting, so you’re doing well! Of course, today doesn’t count, because it’s artificially elevated.

  3. Hilly Says:

Woops, Schmutzie is right….if I knew how to do math properly, it IS more like 1%.

Ahem - maybe I should go back to school?

  4. sizzle Says:

i’m here. as per my usual. ;)

  5. kilax Says:

    It’s just me :(

  6. Sheryl Says:

Not a lurker in the bunch, so far.

  7. Geeky Tai-Tai Says:

I love the new template! Much coolness ;-)

  8. Megan Says:

    OK, I’m in.

  9. SJ Says:

Hilly: I’ve have to get Bret to figure that out for mine. I wouldn’t even know how to start!

Schmutzie: Well, the 30% is how many add my blog to their Favorites! I have no idea what percentage of my readers comment, but it’s definitely dropped lately.

Sizzle and Kim: Yep, you are two of my most reliable commenters! I’m so grateful for you.

Sheryl: Hah! You spoke too soon!

Diana: Thanks! I went fairly simple this year, compared to what I did on The Write Coast last year. It’s too dang hard to restore everything afterward.

Megan: WOO HOO! And welcome!!! I’m so happy to see a new name here — hope you’ll hang out with us.

  10. Megan Says:

    I’m definitely staying.

  11. suze Says:

No delurking necessary here, but I always love an opportunity to say hi to you :P

  12. SJ Says:

    Megan: Good to hear!

Suze: And I’m always happy to hear from you, blogdaughter!

What is up with my Gravatars?!?! They’re showing up in three different sizes. Grrr.

  13. Laughing Muse Says:

There are more lurkers than participants - on the web, and in life. (What can I say? We like to watch.)

I, myself, am sitting on the pavement with my bucket of popcorn, watching the parade go by…and rolling my eyes at the crazy people. :D

  14. Sheryl Says:

I think another point is that some people regard blogs as entertainment, rather than an interactive activity. I understand bloggers wanting feedback, but you don’t offer feedback to the actors on a TV program or in a movie. To some, bloggers are characters, and some bloggers have a separate blog-identity that may or may not be anything like their true self. Reading about that person’s life is sometimes a passive thing, like reading a series of short stories. Just another way to look at it.

  15. ajooja Says:

I love ya SJ, but I’m a horrible commenter. I never know what to say. :)

  16. SJ Says:

Muse: I too like to watch. Oh wait, you’re not talking about porn, are you?

Sheryl: That’s an interesting perspective that I hadn’t considered. But I’ll bet a lot of people look at blog-reading in that way. Or like reading a magazine.

ajooja: Just so I know you’re reading, hon. Not that you don’t wax brilliant over there on your own blog! Although I hear your readership is dropping in Kansas …

  17. Dave2 Says:

Uhhh… when I calculate my comment ratio based on average comments over a month’s span vs. the number of UNIQUE visitors over the same span, the percentage is 0.00666667. That’s pretty pathetic, but I just don’t care. I love comments, but comments aren’t the reason I blog.

  18. SJ Says:

Dave2: Yeah, but you are a WAY more secure person than I am! Sadly, when people read me but don’t comment, I tend to interpret that as my writing not being interesting enough to inspire response.

I don’t think UNIQUE* visitors are an accurate indication. Most people don’t comment the first time they visit a blog, do they? They’re just kind of checking things out. But I’ve gotta get Bret to figure that ratio thingy out for me!

*Doesn’t that mean first-timers? What DOES that mean?

  19. tiff Says:

    Oh-Kay. I’m delurking.

Also, I’m one of those people who added you to my favorties list…

  20. SJ Says:

tiff: Woo hoo! Thank you for de-lurking, AND for favoriting me. I hope you’ll consider joining the Pseudotherapy comment party on a regular basis.

  21. Catherine Says:

Hi! Here I am, although I am not a lurker exactly. I am coming to visit you here after having met you at Lucky Strike. I love your blog, I’ve just subscribed to it and I’ll be back soon!

Thank you for coming to visit me at my blog. You were a lot quicker on the draw than I was.

    :)

  22. SJ Says:

Catherine: Yay!!! So happy to see you here! I’ll be by your place in a bit, too.
